Not since Arturo Gatti and Mick Ward faced off has there been this much hype for a boxing match. Not even the Kelly Pavlik /Bernard Hopkins fight created this much hype. Oscar De La Hoya takes on Manny Pacquiao this saturday in Las Vegas. Pacquiao is regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter on earth, but De La Hoya has the size advantage. It's basically speed vs strength. The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds.
Many boxing experts believe the fight will favor De La Hoya, and consider the fight a mismatch due to De La Hoya's size advantage. Bets have already been taken with De La Hoya as the heavy favorite. Oscar hired legendary trainers Angelo Dundee, Nacho Beristain, and young boxing talent Edwin Valero. Oscar told the news that his team is unbeatable. While the odds are still with Oscar the mega fight will be still fight of the year and possibly break pay-per-view records in boxing history. Tickets reportedly sold out just hours after they went on sale. The total gate revenues were said to be nearly $17 million dollars. That amount would give the bout has the second largest gate revenue in boxing history.
Being the boxing fan I am, I'm mega-pissed that I don't have pay-per-view so I can't see it. But that won't stop me from checking out the highlights on ESPN.com, which has been covering this event quite well.
According to boxing analyst Graham Houston: "Pacquiao was getting hammered by Juan Manuel Marquez's left jabs in their clashes. Now he's facing the left-handed firepower of a man three weight divisions bigger than JMM. Oscar TKO round 10."
Kieran Mulvaney "It isn't just size but also a style matchup for Pacquiao. De La Hoya is all wrong for Pacquiao. Unless the Golden Boy has declined seriously, which is possible, I'll go with Oscar by TKO."
Dan Rafael "A lot of folks think this is a De La Hoya blowout because of his size advantage. I don't buy that. I think it will be a competitive fight, but I also think Oscar will get the job done via a midround TKO."
I don't know what to think here. De La Hoya is the bigger guy, but it's important to remember that it's not the hardest hitter or the bigger guy that wins the fight- it's the better boxer. Any other opinions?

I do not think Oscar has it in him anymore. He seems slower and doesnt have the power he once had. I think that Manny will win in 9 and do it via the TKO.

It feels good knowing I'mnot theonly one who thinks Pacquiao has a chance.

I dodn't mean to imply that this fight would be as good as those, if that's what you're getting at. 'Cause I know there's no way in hell that anything will ever be able to touch those bouts. I have all the respect on the world for both fighters, and they've pretty much sealed their place in boxing history- excuse me, in all of sports history.

Well, today is the big day. In a few hours, the fight of the year will take place in Las Vegas. If only I had PPV...

According to ESPN.com, Pacman dominated Golden Boy. It was over near the beginning of the 9th round. Somehow, in the back of my mind, I always knew Manny would take this.
Major props to Manny. My hats off to him.

It was a massacre. Plain and simple. I thought Pac would win, but not that easily.

Oh yes. Nothing in all of boxing's future will ever be able to touch that. I remember that night, I was mega-pissed I didn't have PPV to watch it, I so remember, the next day, first thing I did, went to ESPN.com, and got the post-fight analysis. Never had I been so pumped up about something in my life. Arturo and Mick... names that will live on forever.
